Transnational security at the regional level and the globe including terrorism, cyber security and the protection of Critical Information Infrastructure, CII, were among the matters discussed at the 4th Sub-Regional Meeting on Counter Terrorism and Transnational Security, SRM that was held in Melbourne, Australia.
Brunei Darussalam’s delegation to the 4th SRM was led by Deputy Minister for Security and Law at the Prime Minister’s Office, in his capacity as Deputy Chairman of the National Security Committee. During the meeting, Dato Seri Paduka Awang Haji Sufian bin Haji Sabtu reiterated the country’s commitment in supporting international efforts to counter terrorism which remains as one of the pertinent threats to the security and stability of the region. Brunei Darussalam pays close attention to the propagation of extremist teachings by individuals who have a deviant understanding on the concept of ‘jihad’. In this regard, the Government of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam will continue to engage in the ‘Whole-of-Nation’ and ‘Whole-of-Government’ approaches to protect its people from the threat of terrorism and violent extremism.
The meeting was Co-Chaired by The Honourable Clair O’Neill, Minister of Home Affairs and Minister of Cyber Security, Australia and His Excellency Mohammad Mahfud MD, Coordinating Minister of Political, Legal and Security Affairs, Republic of Indonesia. Also in attendance were Ministers and Senior Officials from New Zealand, Malaysia, Republic of the Philippines, Republic of Singapore and Thailand. While in Melbourne, Australia, Dato Seri Paduka Awang Haji Sufian also took the opportunity to have a bilateral meeting with The Honourable Clair O’Neill, Minister of Home Affairs and Minister of Cyber Security, Australia to discuss opportunities for cooperation between Brunei Darussalam and Australia in the field of cyber security, maritime enforcement and border security. Dato Seri Paduka Awang Haji Sufian also held a courtesy call with Associate Professor Dr Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim, Minister of State, Ministry of Home Affairs and Ministry of Development, Republic of Singapore.
