Among the activity or religious act that is synonym to Ramadhan is Sunat Tarawih Prayer. In Brunei Darussalam, it is a common practice for the Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Tahfiz Al-Quran Institute to station the students in several mosques to be the imams of the Tarawih prayers. This year, 130 students and graduates from the institute were assigned to lead tarawih prayers in 77 mosques, suraus and religious halls nationwide.
Since it was implemented in 2006, the initiative allow students to revise and strengthen their memorisation, apart from gaining experience as imams. 17 year old, Awang Ahmad Darwish bin Hamdan is among the Year 10 Student at the institute. He has been appointed as Imam for Sunat Tarawih Prayers for two years. In preparation for the Imam task, Awang Ahmad Darwish will revise at least 5 pages of the holy Qur’an after Asar prayer.
Meanwhile, Year 11 student at the institute, Awang Md Zulhelmi Hashim bin Jainudin has been appointed as Imam for Sunat Tarawih Prayers for the three year. He admit of having mixed feelings including being nervous while carrying out his task.
The involvement of the institute’s students is an honour for them. Through such initiative, it is hoped to attract more congregants to the mosques and as one of the steps for the locals, especially the youth, in glorifying the mosque.
