2.5K liters of oil siphoned from MTKR Terranova so far – PCG

MANILA: Oil recovery operations on the sunken MTKR Terranova continue with around 2,500 liters of oil recovered so far, according to the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG). In a situation update on Friday, the PCG said oil recovery operations by the contracted salvor Harbor Star Shipping Services Inc. continue in addition to clearing debris and preparing equipment. The PCG's Marine Science Investigation Force also collected another oil sample batch. Other PCG personnel in the area are responsible for monitoring the ground zero of the sunken oil tanker and are also spraying dispersants to oil that escapes booms. Oil siphoning from one of eight tankers of MTKR Terranova began on Wednesday. Each tank is estimated to be carrying 175,000 liters of industrial fuel oil, or a total of 1.4 million liters. Meanwhile, the PCG has patrolled the shoreline of Barangay Cabcaben, Mariveles, Bataan to observe possible traces of an oil spill from MTKR Jason Bradley, another sunken tanker. BRP Malamawi, a PCG patrol boat, also assessed the waters surrounding MTKR Jason Bradley. For MV Mirola 1-a ship that ran aground in Bataan-the PCG said its contracted salvor, Morning Star, has started preparing equipment to transfer the vessel to a nearby coast for oil extraction. Authorities have also collected oil samples surrounding the vessel for analysis. Source: Philippines News Agency
