2 Chinese nationals nabbed, P2-M illegal cigarettes seized

DAVAO CITY: Two Chinese nationals were apprehended for bringing with them PHP2 million worth of illegal cigarettes here on Tuesday, police said.

In a statement, Col. Hansel Marantan, acting Davao City Police Office (DCPO) director, said the suspects, identified only as ‘Pan’ and ‘Dehong,’ both Chinese nationals, along with their driver ‘Allan,’ were intercepted at a checkpoint manned by the Buhangin Police Station and Regional Special Operation Group 11 (RSOG11) on Aug. 12.

‘We continue to uphold our unwavering commitment to combat all forms of illegal activities that may jeopardize public welfare,’ Marantan said.

He said the suspects would face charges for violating Republic Act 10643 or the Graphic Health Warning Law for the contraband.

During the operation, the apprehended individuals were found in possession of various tobacco products that did not bear the required graphic health warnings as mandated by RA 10643.

The law stipulates that all tobacco products sold in the Philippines must display graph
ic images and warnings that inform consumers of the health risks associated with smoking.

The suspects, who were taken into custody by the police, are currently undergoing the necessary legal procedures as charges will be filed against them for their violation of the law.
