Brunei darussalam: As part of its ongoing commitment to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), Brunei Darussalam is set to enhance its biodiversity conservation efforts through the National Biodiversity Policy and Strategic Action Plan 2024-2030. This plan aims to transform global biodiversity commitments into more effective national actions. The Minister of Primary Resources and Tourism, Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Doctor Awang Haji Abdul Manaf bin Haji Metussin, emphasized the significance of these initiatives in a message coinciding with the International Day for Biological Diversity. The minister highlighted that such conservation efforts are crucial not only for sustaining the nation's natural resources but also for supporting the well-being of the people, enhancing environmental resilience, and fostering economic growth, in alignment with the goals of Wawasan Brunei 2035.
According to Radio Television Brunei, the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism, particularly through its Forestry Department, is leading the charge in biodiversity conservation. The department continues to implement various measures under existing legislation and policies. Part of these efforts includes regular and coordinated forest patrols conducted in collaboration with enforcement agencies to monitor and combat illegal activities.
The importance of youth involvement in shaping a sustainable future is also being recognized, with educational institutions, youth organizations, and community groups playing pivotal roles in promoting environmental stewardship and civic responsibility. This year's theme for the International Day for Biological Diversity, 'Acting Locally for Global Impact,' highlights the critical role of local actions in tackling global environmental challenges.
