DOTr working on roadmap to transition public transport into e-vehicles

Manila: The Department of Transportation (DOTr) is working on a roadmap to transition public transport into electric vehicles. DOTr Undersecretary Jesus Ortega said Monday the department is advancing zero carbon emission and mobility, as well as alternative fuel vehicles as part of the government's commitment to climate response and the gradual shift to renewable energy. 'If our road public transport goes electric, we are on our way to sustainable green transport,' Ortega said. He cited, among others, Executive Order 12 to stimulate the electric vehicle market, support the transition to emerging technologies, reduce the transport system's reliance on fossil fuels, and reduce gas emissions. The DOTr has been pushing for key projects, including the Public Transport Modernization Program (PTMP), Active Transport Program, and partnerships with local government units to promote low-carbon urban transport systems, to adhere to the Paris Agreement. 'This harmonization of transport projects is crucial for shapin g a more sustainable future and creating greener cities that are safe, commuter/pedestrian-friendly, and accessible for all,' he said. Other climate resiliency and climate mitigation efforts are electric trains, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), crew training on the use of methanol for sea vessels, solar panels for airport terminals, and hybrid ferry boats along the Pasig River. The agency is also studying the possibility of providing incentives to transport cooperatives to encourage the use of electric vehicles in public transportation. The incentives for EVs, Ortega said, would be part of the PTMP. Source: Philippines News agency
