Flood control structure safeguards riverside communities in Marinduque

MANILA: Residents of Barangay Maligaya, Boac, Marinduque are now better protected from flood-related hazards following the recent completion of a flood mitigation structure undertaken by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH). A media release on Thursday said the DPWH-Marinduque District Engineering Office spearheaded the construction of a 150-linear meter flood control structure with steel sheet piles aimed at fortifying the riverbank against landslides and soil erosions caused by heavy flooding. Based on the report of DPWH Regional Office IV-B (Mimaropa) Director Gerald Pacanan to Secretary Manuel Bonoan, the completed flood control project in Barangay Maligaya is designed to regulate the water flow, particularly during strong typhoons, posing significant risks to residents, properties, and essential infrastructure in the area. 'The flood control structure in Barangay Maligaya provides a sense of relief and security for the residents, protecting them from the threat of waterborne diseases, on e of the lingering problems in the riverside communities in the municipality of Boac," Pacanan said. Before the completion of this project, residents have been enduring the adverse impact of landslides and solid erosions causing life-threatening conditions, including water contamination due to frequent flooding. Costing PHP16.86 million, the flood control structure was funded through the General Appropriations Act of 2023. Source: Philippines News Agency
