Injured tennis top seed Djokovic withdraws from French Open

ANKARA: Defending champion Novak Djokovic withdrew from the 2024 French Open (Roland Garros) due to an injured right knee on Tuesday.

“Djokovic has withdrawn from Roland Garros due to a right knee injury. Wishing Novak a speedy recovery,” the tournament said on X.

The 24-time Serbian Grand Slam champion, who won the French Open in 2016, 2021, and 2023, was supposed to face Casper Ruud in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.

Instead, Norway’s Ruud received a walkover into the semifinals.

On Tuesday, Poland’s Iga Swiatek, the world No. 1 in women’s singles, dominated her Czech opponent Marketa Vondrousova 6-0, 6-2 in a quarterfinal match at the Court Philippe-Chatrier.

Swiatek, who won the French Open women’s title in 2020, 2022, and 2023, will face American third seed Coco Gauff in the semifinals.

Meanwhile, Gauff won against Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur with the sets of 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 in the women’s last eight to book her place in the semis.

The French Open will end on Sunday.
