ILOILO: Muslim learners in Western Visayas showcased their heritage and culture during the Musabaqah for Madrasah Education Program, one of the categories in the 2024 Regional Festival of Talents (RFOT) of the Department of Education (DepEd). The inclusion of the Musabaqah for Madrasah Education Program in the categories of RFOT is a way of showing inclusivity toward the Filipino Muslim community, said Hernani Escullar Jr., DepEd regional information officer in an interview on Tuesday, the last day of the two-day RFOT at the Iloilo National High School. Escullar said 21 learners from Panay and Negros Occidental, accompanied by seven coaches, joined the RFOT as they vie for top places in Qur'an Reading, Harf Touch, and Oration (Naseehah) to represent the region at the national festival in Cebu City next month. 'Every learner must be given accessible, quality, relevant, and liberating basic education. We have the Madrasah Program, and [the] RFOT is an avenue for our Muslim brothers and sisters to showcase th eir rich heritage and culture,' he said. Escullar said 24 schools in seven of the 21 division offices in Western Visayas offer Madrasah education. The RFOT gathered around 600 learners from the 21 divisions, competing in 24 competencies under seven categories. All events in the RFOT are aligned with the essential learning competencies and standards of the K to 12 curriculum, consistent with the department's dedicated efforts to produce functionally literate and holistically developed Filipinos, said DepEd Regional Director RAmir Uytico on Monday.
