P15-M road in Antique to hasten transport of farm goods to market

SAN JOSE DE BUENAVISTA: The civil works for the PHP15 million farm-to-market road (FMR) in this capital town of San Jose de Buenavista started this week, allowing easier access for farmers when bringing their produce to the market.

Municipal agriculture officer Lucia Bantolo, in an interview Wednesday, said the Department of Agriculture provided funds for the one-kilometer road project from Sitio Suong to Barangay Pantao Proper, eyed for completion within the year.

‘The Department of Public Works and Highways started the FMR project only this week,’ she said.

Farmers from Barangay Pantao are into vegetable and fruit production, such as mongo, banana, and sugarcane.

Without the road, they have to traverse the rough road from their farms to the market or wait for hours to get a ride since tricycles rarely go to their area.

Bantolo added that 15 lot owners donated portions of their farm lots for the road construction.

Meanwhile, 442 farmers affected by El Niño received PHP3,000 in financial assistance each
from the local government unit on June 14.

She said they could use the assistance to buy fertilizers or purchase their other needs.
