MANILA: Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil on Sunday issued a directive to rationalize the deployment of the Police Security and Protection Group (PSPG).
Marbil said the ideal police-to-population ratio of 1:500 must be realized, unlike the current 1:2,000.
The directive prioritizes security for individuals with high-security threats, ensuring better coverage for the broader population.
‘Our directive is to ensure that our limited security resources are allocated effectively, focusing on individuals who genuinely face significant security threats. This way, we can enhance our protective services for those in need while optimizing our overall public safety efforts in our communities,’ Marbil said in a media release.
Key factors in the PNP assessments include recent incidents of threats or attacks, role in government or society and intelligence reports indicating potential risks.
‘Reducing the unnecessary deployment of security personnel to low-threat individuals will allow
us to support field operations more effectively and address other critical policing needs,’ Marbil said.
Meanwhile, Marbil assured that the PNP continues to provide top-tier security to Vice President Sara Duterte.
He said that despite the recent transfer of 75 protective officers to other police units, Duterte retains the most extensive security detail compared to her predecessors.
According to a report from PSPG Director, Brig. Gen. William Segun, the 75 PSPG officers were redeployed to the National Capital Region Police Office, while 31 remain assigned to the Vice President.
‘The adjustments in security personnel reflect our commitment to adapting to current security needs while also adhering to directives that enhance overall police efficiency,’ Marbil said.
He said local police also augment Duterte’s security every time she visits provinces.
