Brunei Darussalam Reaffirms Commitment to IMO Goals at Assembly Session

London: Brunei Darussalam has voiced its strong support for the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) efforts towards advancing safer, greener, and more efficient maritime transport. The nation is also promoting digitalization and reinforcing its commitment to seafarers and developing states, as stated by the Minister of Transport and Infocommunications at the 34th Regular Session of the IMO Assembly held recently.

According to Radio Television Brunei, the session marked Brunei Darussalam’s 40th year as an IMO member. Yang Berhormat Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Shamhary bin Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Mustapha emphasized the country’s ongoing partnership to further a safe, secure, and sustainable maritime industry. Key initiatives include modernizing the Vessel Traffic Management System and implementing the Maritime Single Window by March 2025, aligning with the Convention on Facilitation of International Maritime Traffic.

Addressing the 2023 IMO Strategy on the Reduction of Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Ships, Yang Berhormat stressed the importance of an inclusive and feasible transition towards low-and-zero emission shipping for all member states, taking into account their varying capacities and circumstances. The minister also underscored the maritime sector’s role in economic diversification, trade facilitation, national resilience, and the creation of future-ready employment opportunities.

In addition to these commitments, Yang Berhormat engaged in a series of bilateral discussions to explore potential collaborations in maritime development, including broader cooperation in transport, logistics, and connectivity.

During a courtesy call with His Excellency Francis Zachariae, Secretary-General of the International Organization for Marine Aids to Navigation (IALA), Yang Berhormat highlighted Brunei Darussalam’s efforts to enhance maritime safety. This includes ongoing upgrades of navigational systems and infrastructure, as well as plans to accede to the Convention on the IALA.
