Brunei’s Commitment to Disability Rights Highlighted on International Day

Bandar seri begawan: Brunei Darussalam continues to emphasize its dedication to the rights of individuals with disabilities through a Whole-of-Nation approach. This commitment was underscored by the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports in a message marking the 32nd International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

According to Radio Television Brunei, Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Haji Nazmi Mohamad reported that since the implementation of the Persons with Disabilities Order on October 1, 2021, a total of 5,443 individuals are now part of the Register of Persons with Disabilities. Additionally, 7,615 individuals receive Disability Allowances, with 1,195 of them also benefiting from both the Old Age Pension and the Disability Allowance. Furthermore, 3,164 caregivers receive Care Provider Allowances.

The Minister also highlighted several initiatives and achievements aimed at enhancing the rights and accessibility for persons with disabilities. These initiatives include the formation of a task force to improve access and rights for persons with disabilities, the introduction of PWD vehicle stickers, and the issuance of a new series of banknotes in 2026 with tactile features to aid the visually impaired. The SafeLink project, featuring safety bracelets for children with autism, ensures their safety by providing emergency contact information via a QR code.

The 3rd of December celebration theme, ‘Fostering Disability Inclusive Societies for Advancing Social Progress,’ aligns with Brunei’s National Action Plan on People with Different Abilities. This plan, part of the National Council on Social Issues, focuses on creating an inclusive environment, with accessible infrastructure, PWD-friendly facilities, anti-discrimination measures, and policy development that includes the voices of persons with disabilities.
