Brunei’s Commitment to Strengthening Family Institutions Highlighted on International Day of Families

Bandar seri begawan: The International Day of Families, celebrated on May 15th, serves as a testament to Brunei Darussalam's dedication to fortifying family institutions, recognized as the cornerstone of societal well-being. This global observance aligns with Brunei's commitment as an ASEAN Member State, particularly through the Bandar Seri Begawan Declaration on the Importance of the Family for Community Development and Nation-Building 2021. The theme for this year's celebration, 'Families, Inequalities and Child Well-Being', underscores pressing global challenges, such as social inequalities and economic pressures that jeopardize family stability.

According to Radio Television Brunei, Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Nazmi bin Haji Awang Mohamad, the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, emphasized that Brunei's family intervention strategies have become more comprehensive and strategic. These efforts focus on reinforcing family resilience, evidenced by a significant 58 percent reduction in family cases referred to the Family Unit at the Department of Community Development in 2025 compared to the previous year. This decline, from 62 cases to 26 cases, highlights the success of early intervention, family counseling, mediation, and targeted welfare support in resolving family conflicts.

Child well-being remains a critical focus, as evidenced by a reduction in child-related cases to 172 in 2025 from 188 in 2024. The management of these cases adheres to the principle of prioritizing the child's best interests through thorough social assessments and coordinated inter-agency support. This approach ensures a stable and nurturing family environment conducive to children's holistic development. Yang Berhormat called upon all stakeholders to collaborate, ensuring that every family in Brunei receives the necessary support to thrive in a peaceful and harmonious society.
