Challenges in the Paddy Industry Impacting Production Rates

Bandar seri begawan: Paddy production over the past five years has fluctuated between 3,500 metric tonnes and 4,100 metric tonnes annually. The slow growth in the paddy industry's output can be attributed to several challenges faced by farmers, including unpredictable weather, the El Ni±o and La Ni±a phenomena, and crop pest attacks. These issues were highlighted by the Assistant Director and Head of the Paddy Industry Division, Department of Agriculture and Agrifood, during an interview with RTB.

According to Radio Television Brunei, Dayang Khairunnisa binti Haji Omar Ali of the Department of Agriculture and Agrifood emphasized that the department is committed to supporting local farmers in overcoming these challenges to enhance local rice production.

A local farmer, Awang Muhammad Joh Rezuan bin Abdullah @ Radin, noted that he cultivates various paddy varieties, including the BDR 5, using traditional methods. There is hope that paddy planting and production will increase the nation's paddy output and the rate of rice self-sufficiency, while also providing income for local farmers.
