Brunei Darussalam Strengthens Security Ties with Russia at ASEAN Consultations

Moscow: Brunei Darussalam will continue to collaborate with ASEAN Dialogue Partner countries, including the Russian Federation, to address regional and international security challenges such as transnational crime. This commitment was articulated by the Deputy Minister for Security and Law at the Prime Minister's Office, who also serves as the Deputy Chairman of the National Security Committee (NSC), during the 6th ASEAN-Russia Consultations of the High Representatives for Security Issues held recently in Moscow, Russian Federation.

According to Radio Television Brunei, Dato Seri Paduka Awang Haji Sufian bin Haji Sabtu attended the 1st International Security Forum, organized by the Security Council of the Russian Federation from May 26 to 29, 2026. During the consultations, he expressed gratitude to the Security Council of the Russian Federation for providing Brunei's security agencies with training opportunities through ASEAN platforms, such as the ASEAN Senior Officials' Meeting on Transnational Crime and the ASEAN Senior Officials' Meeting on Drug Matters.

The Deputy Minister also held a bilateral meeting with Mr. Alexander Venedictov, Deputy Secretary to the Security Council of the Russian Federation, to discuss mutual interests under the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the NSC of Brunei Darussalam and the Russian Security Council. Both parties expressed satisfaction with the strong ties and cooperation in security matters, and explored potential future areas of collaboration under the MoU.

Furthermore, the Deputy Minister participated in the Plenary Session of the 14th International Meeting of High-Ranking Officials Responsible for Security Matters, chaired by His Excellency Sergei Shoigu, Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation. The session was attended by ministers and senior representatives from 120 countries, providing a platform for discussing global security issues.

In addition, the Deputy Minister met with Mr. Sergei Mikheev, Deputy Director of the Foreign Intelligence Service of the Russian Federation, to discuss further opportunities for bilateral cooperation on issues of mutual interest. His Excellency Pengiran Muhammad Husaini bin Pengiran Penggawa Laila Bentara Istiadat Diraja Dalam Istana Pengiran Haji Alauddin, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Brunei Darussalam to the Russian Federation, was also present at the meeting.
